Stop Waiting For A Miracle
I find that as new information on medical breakthroughs are released; the public becomes more confused about how to manage their own conditions and are eager to jump at a chance to benefit from new technology. We all want to believe that advances in medicine will readily fix our aches and pains. The problem is that these breakthroughs require several years of study before their effectiveness and long-term results can be measured.
One of the most common conditions people face and hope to find relief from is low back pain. Many people suffer from it – young and old – yet most are dissatisfied with the reason or cause attributed to it. When someone sees a doctor for low back pain, they are often told their spine is fine, that it’s just muscular, or perhaps their pain is a result of stress or poor posture. Other times, the discs are worn or their low back pain is diagnosed as arthritis. None or these reasons are truly satisfying to a patient; therefore, they feel there must be an easy solution: A new minimal surgery? Maybe a disc replacement? How about just trading in the whole back?!
The reality is that dealing with back pain is a complex situation that requires proper instruction on exercise, changes in lifestyle (including weight loss), and a commitment to long-term management. I tell my patients they must do their exercises every day, “just like brushing your teeth.
Most importantly, no two people have the same back problem. First, a complete physical examination must be performed which should include postural flexibility, strength, and motion. Second, a proper exercise program must be custom fit to the patient – there is no generic approach to exercise. A proper exercise regimen is a necessary part of managing low back pain and can be easily implemented into one’s lifestyle. Stop waiting for a miracle – you have the power to end your pain.
