Joy Vs. Happiness

Cherry blossoms, bubbles, googly eyes and rainbows. Why do these things create universal joy? From children to adults, the sight of a rainbow just makes us smile. Bubbles just turn us into mush as we try to pop them and catch them without popping them.

The physical world, in which we work, is a powerful resource for us and our clients in creating a happier healthier life. In the polarizing opposite world of today’s political environment, I challenge you to find two individuals on opposite side of the broadly divided isle who do not like ice-cream with sprinkles on a hot day or a purple-pink sun set sitting on the dock on a lake.

Joy is an intense momentary experience of positive emotion.  Joy is feeling good in the moment and happiness is joy over time.  As a western culture we’re driven to find happiness and have forgotten about the moments of joy that make up happiness. Shouldn’t we be trying to find and create these moments of joy which in time will lead to happiness?

Have you ever felt this with your work?  Has your work ever created joy for you?  Isn’t joy intangible? Maybe. Maybe not.  How can a tangible profession, one that is based on human touch create joy?

It just does! You see, the physical touch and the creation of freedom and flow where there once was none. Or the ability to create space for someone to feel (their own selves or the word around them) in a different way creates this emotion we call joy.

Small victories in movement, biomotion, feeling and taking the preverbal foot off the break leads to moments of joy. String a whole bunch of joy together and you get happiness.

Find your ice-cream cone with sprinkles, your tree house in nature, your swimming pool on a hot day.

My wish is that you find your joy - strung together in happiness.
